Prior to her retirement, Dr. Thornton served as President of Cuyahoga Community College from 1992 to 2013. From 1985 to 1992, Dr. Thornton served as President of Lakewood Community College in White Bear Lake, Minnesota. She received her Ph.D. degree from the University of Texas at Austin and her M.A. and B.A. degrees from Murray State University. Dr. Thornton is also a director of Applied Industrial Technologies, Inc., Barnes & Noble Education, Inc., and FirstEnergy Corp. Dr. Thornton is also a board member of United Way of Greater Cleveland, Greater Cleveland Partnership, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum – Cleveland and New York, University Hospitals of Cleveland, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and Playhouse Square Foundation. From 2004 until 2011, Dr. Thornton was a director of American Family Insurance, and from 2001 until 2008, Dr. Thornton was a director of National City Corporation. Dr. Thornton previously served as a director for American Greetings Corporation from 2000 to 2013.
The Board of Directors has determined that Dr. Thornton should serve as a Director because of her extensive executive management experience and her experience serving on boards of directors of public companies. In addition, as the president of Cuyahoga Community College, Dr. Thornton demonstrated management expertise. She also is a recognized leader in the local community. Dr. Thornton, because of this experience, among other things, provides the Board of Directors a valuable perspective on engagement with the public sector and the communities in which the Company operates. Dr. Thornton also provides the Board of Directors a valuable perspective as a member of the boards of several local non-profit organizations.
