At Rust-Oleum, they believe in doing more than just business – they use their resources to make a meaningful impact. A new partnership with Habitat for Humanity now transforms discontinued materials and product into opportunities for change. And it’s already making waves of impact in and out of our organization.
The Spark of an Idea
David Divoky, Product Operations Manager, has always had a knack for turning challenges into opportunities. "The standard practice was to send unsellable materials to a paint recycler where we got pennies on a dollar for it. And sometimes, nothing at all," David explains. "But every time I saw good materials go to waste, it bothered me. I've always been one to ask why not do it differently?” With a history of community service stemming from his time as an Eagle Scout, David was inspired to find a better way.
That’s when he reached out to Habitat for Humanity through a contact in our Kenosha distribution center. Not only could these materials be used to construct new homes, he discovered they could also be sold in Habitat's ReStores, which are home improvement resale shops.
A Growing Impact
Since launching this initiative in early 2024, Rust-Oleum donated more than $180,000 worth of goods across Wisconsin, Northern Illinois, Maryland, and California. These weren’t just any materials; they included high-quality primers, cleaning supplies, roofing fabrics, and paints—all ready to be used for home construction and in home improvement projects through Habitat’s ReStores.
"Knowing that our materials are being used to build actual homes is deeply fulfilling," says David. “We’re contributing to a greater cause and the response has been overwhelming.”
David's personal connection to community service adds a poignant layer to this initiative. "I’ve seen firsthand the struggles people face when housing is insecure," he says, reflecting on past experiences. “This project isn’t just about doing charity work; it's about enabling real, sustainable change.”
Empowering Change
“If there’s a better way, we should explore it,” notes David. “Our leadership is incredibly open-minded, and that’s what has allowed this idea to truly take off.”
And it’s even prompted Habitat to reach out to other manufacturers for similar donations. David adds with a smile, “We’re igniting a ripple effect.”
Call to Action
At Rust-Oleum, they foster a culture where ideas are valued, and action is encouraged. David's story is a testament to their belief that everyone can be a driver of change to build a better world. "If you have an idea that could make a difference, pursue it," he says. "You never know where it might lead."
